I have learned in life that my health is foundational to my success and happiness. A healthy lifestyle increases my production, produces a healthy mood, which results in healthier relationships. A healthy lifestyle increases my creative ideas and solutions for problems that I deal with on a daily basis.

Just think about this, when you are feeling at the top of your game, healthy, filled with energy and passion, how much can you produce? How is your attitude when you are at the top of your game? With these questions in mind, read about my recent mountain experience.

I was enjoying a hike in the mountains and watched an older man running through this mountain trail like a young teenager. I thought to myself, “Look at this man…many people find so many reasons to not be active, healthy, and do something productive yet he’s running up this mountain.” So we got an interview with him. I videotaped him to find out more about him and to see what motivates him to run up this mountain like he does.

This man inspired many people who were hiking there. A young guy saw me filming him and said, “That old man is a beast, he’s here almost every day”. I videotaped his story and him sharing his motivations, you can watch at This man was full of life and just exciting to be out there. Let us learn from the man in the mountains and reap the benefits of staying active, positive and working hard.

Here are some exercise benefits:

1. Keep you young
Workouts such as brisk walking or cycling boost the amount of oxygen consumed during exercise. Improving your aerobic capacity by just 15 to 25 percent would be like shaving 10 to 20 years off your age. Aerobic exercise may also stimulate the growth of new brain cells in older adults.

2. Reduce infections
Moderate workouts temporarily rev up the immune system by increasing the aggressiveness or capacity of immune cells. That may explain why people who exercise catch fewer colds.

3. Prevent heart attacks
Not only does exercise raise “good” HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure, but new research shows it reduces arterial inflammation, another risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. Regular exercise helps to keep the heart muscle in shape and can ward off common cardiac problems. Cardiovascular training for the elderly increases respiratory intake and helps fight common illnesses, such as a cold or the flu. Vascular occlusion, or the blocking of arteries, can occur when you grow older. Exercise can help reduce the risk by lowering blood cholesterol.

4. Ease asthma.
New evidence shows that upper-body and breathing exercises can reduce the need to use an inhaler in mild cases of asthma.

5. Control blood sugar
Exercise helps maintain a healthy blood-sugar level by increasing the cells’ sensitivity to insulin and by controlling weight. Regular brisk walking can significantly cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

6. Protect against cancer
Exercise may reduce the risk of colon cancer by speeding waste through the gut and lowering the insulin level. It may also protect against breast and prostate cancer by regulating hormone levels.

7. Combat stress
Regular aerobic exercise lowers levels of stress hormones. For many people, exercise helps relieve depression as effectively as antidepressant medication.

8. Relieve hot flashes.
Increasing fitness by walking or practicing yoga enhances mood and reduces some menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats.

9. Protect men’s health
Pelvic exercises help prevent erectile dysfunction and possibly benign prostate enlargement, a common cause of urinary problems.

10. Prolong life
Studies lasting many years have consistently shown that being active cuts the risk of premature death by about 50 percent for men and women.

11. Mobility
When you grow older, bones can become brittle and the muscles shorten. An elderly person can lose the balance and coordination that they have had their entire lives. Staying active helps keep the body flexible. Stretching routines will lengthen muscle tissue and help prevent wasting and shortening. Exercise can reduce incidents of arthritis and osteoporosis by increasing bone density and joint range of motion. If you are currently being treated for any chronic illness, your doctor can advise you of safe exercises that will improve your health.

13. Mental Health
Exercise is a natural mood enhancer. When you work out, the body releases endorphins that make you feel capable. If you are elderly and fighting the psychological effects of aging, exercise may be the key to giving you drive and energy. A sedentary lifestyle can affect you at any age, but after retirement, the days may seem longer. Take part in an exercise program to help fill some of the hours. An ordinary walk when you feel blue will enhance your spirits. Exercise will also improve cognitive functions. As you age, your memory may not be as clear as it once was. Exercise can help improve mental focus.
