Pause for a second and take a moment to think about what you were like when you were younger. Chances are that life was intriguing and full of possibilities. The universe felt like an endless frontier and you had all the enthusiasm in the world to explore and conquer. You probably imagined yourself as a superhero or a Rockstar. The reason why this spark existed in your soul when you were younger is simple. You dared to dream. You had the boldness to expect good things from the future regardless of any challenge. This motivation is invaluable. All dreams evolve over time, but if nurtured in a healthy way, they can navigate us towards exciting accomplishments in life. Considering the profound joy you have to gain from realizing your dreams, one of the worst things that can happen to a person is letting go of them. And sadly, countless people do exactly that. No matter how much your dreams may change over time though, it’s never too late to rediscover, and reignite them. Here are five detrimental habits to avoid if you want your dreams to stay alive:

1.      Forgetting Work/Life Balance:

Your dreams will only be attainable if you are healthy enough to pursue them. Don’t allow yourself to burnout by focusing too much on work. In the same vein, don’t allow yourself to neglect the hustle that’s necessary in order to pursue your dreams in the first place. Work hard enough to chase them, and rest well enough to enjoy them.

2.      Hanging on to Baggage:

Pain from the past can paralyze people. It can deceive people into obsessing about failures and betrayals at the expenses of progress. If hard times have ever interfered with your path in life, don’t forget to move on when the time comes. If you fall down seven times, make sure to get back up eight times as well.

3.      Overthinking:

Doing things by the book feels safe, but it can also blind you to the fact that life is unpredictable. Always be flexible and open to the fact that life is dynamic. Sometimes you have to think outside the box. You have to trust the process. You have to be open to the possibility that luck happens. Be strategic, but have some faith too.

4.      Pessimism:

Words hold tremendous power. They can either rouse people into action or crush souls into defeat. In order to visualize and motivate yourself to stay the course, never cut yourself down through negative speech. Eliminate any and all language from your vocabulary that discourages you or those around you from contributing positively to your goals. After all, you possess that which you confess.

5.      Settling for Less:

Ambition is the fuel necessary for achievement. For as long as you have breath in your lungs, aspire for more and more and more. If your target is a mountaintop, aim for the sky. If your target is the sky, aim for the stars. Limiting yourself only sabotages the infinite nature of your potential.

Dreams are an indispensable element of the human experience. They are a unique ingredient of self-expression because they represent a manifestation of our deepest, most sincere desires. Even though every human being has an innate ability to dream, many people tragically stop. This is a mistake however.
